Chapter Ten

Amber

When I next awoke, I felt far more like myself. My body still ached, and my head was a little fuzzy, but I was at least starting to feel human again. I cracked open my eyes and when the unfamiliar room registered on my senses, I sat bolt upright in bed, blinking away the last remnants of sleep.

Where was I?

The room had a decidedly masculine feel to it.

Was I in Travis’ bed?

Why wasn’t I in the guest room anymore? I tried to think back to what had happened the last time I’d been awake and when I remembered the scene in the living room, my face heated from shame. I’d behaved so poorly in front of Travis’ friends. What must they think of me? What would Travis think of me? After my little display, I must have fainted. Had Travis carried me into his room? I groaned as I threw my legs out of bed.

I chewed on my bottom lip as I glanced at the door. I really didn’t want to see Travis, but I needed to check on Joshua and I had to face the music sooner or later. I figured there was no time like the present.

My hand hovered over the handle of the door before I decided to pull up my big girl panties and act like a grown-up instead of a pathetic teenager.

“Travis?” I called as I went out into the hallway.

No answer.

I frowned, making my way into the living room. My legs still felt a little shaky, but I wasn’t dizzy anymore and didn’t feel in danger of passing out. I was hellish thirsty though.

“Travis?”

When I got to the living room and realized they weren’t there, panic tried to claw its way out of my chest. Where were they? Had something happened to Joshua? My stomach plummeted as I rushed from room to room. I hoped to find them in one of the other bedrooms, but it soon became evident that the house was empty.

My stomach churned.

I’d never been parted from Joshua before—not for a single second. What if he needed me? Would Travis know how to care for him, how to feed him? What if Joshua had caught my flu and needed to go to the hospital? He was only a baby, how would it affect him? Would Travis know what to do? It occurred to me that apart from a couple of dates we’d been on over a year ago, I knew absolutely nothing about Travis Gill—nothing at all—at least nothing about anything important like the type of man he was. Could I trust him with my son? When that last thought entered my head, I was in full-blown panic mode and close to losing it completely.

I forced myself to calm down.

I wouldn’t be any use to myself or Joshua if I had some sort of panic attack. I needed to think rationally. I didn’t have Travis’ cellphone number, but maybe he’d left a note. I checked all the counter tops in the kitchen and the coffee table in the living room, but there was nothing.
